This adventurous overland tour takes us on a journey along the ancient Silk Route, along which traders in ancient times would travel between Europe and the Far East. We take in the great outdoors and spectacular mountain scenery of the countries of Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan. These remote and rugged lands are often among our travellers' favourites in Central Asia. Home to nomadic peoples who will host us during our slow journey across the region, we'll have time to explore the wilds and for easy trekking and horse-riding. In China we continue along the Silk Route and up into China’s historic north, taking in key sights like the Terracotta Army near Xi'an, the giant Buddha of Bingling Si, Beijing's Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City, the Yungang Grottoes and Hanging Monastery near Datong, and of course the Great Wall itself.
  • Guided tour of Xi'an's world famous Terracotta Warriors
  • Explore Xi'an and its myriad of attractions
  • Stay overnight in a Lijiashan cliff-side guesthouse built into a cave
  • Visit the beautiful and ornate Black Dragon temple near Lijiashan
  • 3 nights in Pingyao to explore sites such as Mian Shan Mountain Resort and Zhangbi Underground City
  • Explore the myriad of temples at Wutai Shan
  • 2 nights to explore Datong's Hanging Monastery and the stunning Yungang Caves
  • Fully explore the awe-inspiring Great Wall of China at Jinshanling
  • Explore the Imperial city of Chengde, summer home to the Emperor's family
  • Discover the varied and interesting history of China at the National Museum
  • Enjoy a guided visit to the Forbidden City in Beijing
  • Take the Beijing metro to the centre's famous Tiananmen Square
  • This is a great tour for those who like to get outside their comfort zone. In Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan we'll be getting out into the great outdoors, sometimes travelling through mountains at over 3,000m altitude, and wild camping and staying with locals in traditional yurts. When we travel along the Silk Road in China we'll be staying mostly in small hotels and local guesthouses. There are some long drive days on this tour but the scenery and the atmosphere is spectacular.

See the notes at the bottom for more details.**Another important note - please be aware that all itineraries in Kyrgyzstan are highly weather-dependent. The itinerary described in these notes are a statement of best intention, but we must approach each trip in Kyrgyzstan with a large degree of flexibility, as our leaders and local guides will have to 'play things by ear' according to the local conditions and weather. In low season certain routes become impossible and it may become far too cold to camp - in all cases there are fantastic and well-tried alternatives in place which means we can always run an excellent and comprehensive trip here, but please do not treat the exact details of the itinerary listed here as gospel - thanks for your understanding!*
