Closest Underground: Harrow on the Hill.
Harrow School is one of England’s oldest and finest private schools. It was founded in 1572, on the initiative of the local yeoman farmer, John Lyon, and at that time it had only one student.
The original intention was to provide an education for local boys. Since then, several prominent people have attended the school, amongst others, Winston Churchill.
Today, 800 boys attend the school, one of the few boarding schools in England with no day students.
Today, the school also consists of the original classroom, the Fourth Form Room, which is kept in its original state from 1572.
You can also visit the Chapel, the Speech Room, and the Shepherd Churchill Dining Room.
The tour is led by a guide attached to the school. Some of the guides used by the school are former students.
The guide will tell the history of the school, about former students and exciting anecdotes from the everyday life of the students – particular emphasis is placed on the students’ everyday life at the school.
It is interesting to compare boarding school education in England to education in Denmark. The visit provides an insight in school life in English private schools.
