Westminster Abbey was founded by Edward the Confessor between 1045 and 1050.
The church was previously an abbey church (hence the name) and since 1066, all coronations, weddings and funerals of British monarchs have been held there.
There are also numerous sepulchral monuments for kings and queens, national heroes, politicians and writers.
A section of the south transept is known as the Poet’s Corner, originally the burial place for the writer, Geoffrey Chaucer. Since then, other cultural personalities have been buried close to him, amongst others Isaac Newton, Charles Dickens and G.F. Händel.
Since 1560, Westminster Abbey is considered the monarch’s own church and thus not subject to any bishop.
Westminster Abbey is an impressive masterpiece in different architectural and sculptural styles, yet mainly in the Gothic style.
