Our medical initiative is in its infancy and requires the skills of both established medical and healthcare professionals and those interested in teaching basic first aid and hygiene.
Apart from needing qualified professionals in order to conduct health camps and dental check-ups, we welcome volunteers with an interest in education and simple hygiene techniques to join the newly established Healthcare Education project. As such, it is not imperative that volunteers have a medical background.

The project aims to prevent many avoidable health problems and easily communicable diseases. Volunteers are also encouraged to come prepared with an idea of what they wish to teach, which could vary from basic anatomy and body functions to basic diseases, exercising and healthy eating.

Volunteers run healthcare campaigns in local schools around Ubud, actively teaching basic first aid, nutrition and the importance of personal hygiene - emphasizing brushing teeth correctly, washing hands and general body cleanliness. Many of our daily routines that we carry out without thinking are not common practice with the children you will meet, but starting simple education early can go a long way for immediate and future healthcare. For volunteers with a medical background, check-up clinics can be held for local children and adults.

It is entirely up to you to decide what you are going to teach. However we will provide you with examples of what previous participants have done and that will be helpful for you to start with.

Please note that the volunteer activities and schedule can change at any time based on the needs of the project, local conditions, the weather and unforeseen circumstances.

Evenings & Weekends
During the evenings the volunteers are generally free, and there are no program activities scheduled unless otherwise mentioned. Weekends are always free.

Public Holidays

During the following public and school examination periods the Healthcare Education Project is closed, but alternative activities such as cleaning and renovation work will be available.

2019
22 July - 03 August *
17 August
11 September (No activities)
04-09 December

* One of the most important ceremonies for Balinese people, Galungan and Kuningan Hindu ceremony will take place between 22 July and 3 August 2019. During this time we have arranged cleaning and renovation activities at a local school for approximately 4-5 hours a day including repairing broken tables, chairs, doors, windows and other classroom items. The aim is to help create a better atmosphere for the students to learn.

2020
25 Mar *

* Day of Silence (Nyepi) is a Hindu ceremony reserved for self-reflection. This takes place from 06:00 on 25 Mar until 06:00 on 26 Mar 2020. On Nyepi Day the project as well as the airport, shops and businesses are closed, and everyone must stay at home.

Ceremonies
Besides public holidays, there are several Balinese religious culture events, known as 'ceremonies'. Please respect both the Balinese people and your coordinators during these village events that can take place at any time and are always beyond the volunteer organisation's control. There have been instances where volunteers have traveled to their program in the morning only to find out that the project is closed for the day due to a ceremony being held in that village. This is because everyone in the village is expected to attend. We would greatly appreciate your understanding and cooperation during these Balinese cultural events, and ask you to follow your coordinator's instructions in the event of one occurring on your program.

a) Please note that the volunteer organisation is not notified every time a ceremony is about to be held. Unfortunately there is no calendar for ceremonies we can refer to beforehand, also each village is slightly different.
b) The volunteer organisation always confirms that there are normal activities prior to sending you to your project, but there have been cases where volunteers were still turned away at the last minute.
c) Your coordinators will redirect you to another program if there is a ceremony at your program venue.
d) Please avoid arguing or raising your voice. Confrontation will not change the situation as the project staff are not in control of these events. Your coordinator will do their best to place you in another program that is available.

What Makes a Good Volunteer?

Volunteers need to be flexible and keep an open mind concerning their placements as situations can arise beyond our control which could require you to be placed at a different project than the one you have initially chosen. We will of course always do our utmost to fulfill your initial wishes but do remember that where you are going is quite different from where you are coming and as such one should be prepared for things not always going according to plan.

Volunteering and intercultural travel share a common trait: the more you put into it, the more you get out of it. This program is designed for proactive individuals and groups that are prepared to adapt to the local environment and its current needs. Naturally, the scheduling and activities of our program are subject to change. Alterations in activities are mainly due to changes in local conditions, which we believe is part of what makes overseas programs the interesting adventure and incredible learning experience that they are.

How Long Should I Volunteer?

Our projects range from 1 week up to approx. 30 weeks. Projects have a specified minimum stay, then it’s up to you how long you can commit. In our experience the longer you stay the more you will gain, as your understanding of the project broadens and you take on more responsibilities. Every volunteer will be given a certificate of appreciation at the end of their stay as a symbol of volunteering stay.

Optional Culture Week

This program can also include a Culture Week which is highly recommended but not mandatory - just inform your travel advisor if you wish to include it. Indonesia is one of the most interesting countries in the world for cultural learning and experiences, which means that this week is packed full of exciting adventures, cultural excursions and interactions.

During the Culture Week you will be participating in various activities to get you acquainted with the Balinese culture. You will study the Balinese language, and explore Ubud including the famous Monkey Street as well as the beautiful surrounding areas. Bali is renowned for its diverse and sophisticated art forms, such as painting, sculpture, wood carving, handicrafts and performing arts, so we'll have you challenge your artistic and creative side with traditional Batik painting. Another fun thing to try out is a Balinese cooking class. Finally, you will make a traditional flower offering and offer your creation at one of the most impressive Balinese temples: The Holy Tirta Empul Temple. We take a short spiritual tour around this famous temple, bathe in holy waters and pray for good luck. Evenings during the Culture Week and the weekend after are free unless otherwise mentioned.

Since the weekends are free, you are able to go wherever you would like to go. Several popular destinations that you can reach by taxi are:

The Gili Islands, where you will find small resorts and huts for tourists looking to get away from the bustle of Ubud. The islands are a popular destination for snorkeling and diving due to its abundant marine life.

Lovina, located between the Bedugul mountains and the sea, it is popular for dolphin watching, trekking, hot springs and its gorgeous coral reefs.

Boende

You will be accommodated in one of the house in the village of Pejeng and it will take about 15-20 minutes by car to reach the center of Ubud. Located on the outskirts of Ubud, village life is quintessentially local and you will get a good chance to see typical Balinese life - roosters crowing and all!

Living conditions are comfortable and all volunteer houses have fans in the bedrooms. Volunteers can expect to share a dormitory style room with three to seven other volunteers. The bathroom is shared with a hot water shower and western toilet. For couples or those wanting more privacy, private rooms with ensuite bathroom and fans are available for an additional cost. These rooms are in privately owned homes close to the volunteer accommodation.

WiFi is available at the volunteer accommodation and there are great internet cafes in Ubud if you would like access to a higher speed connection.

All facilities that you could want are within easy access of our accommodation. There are ATMs and minimarts within a 5-minute walk.

All participants are expected to be environmentally responsible and to use all resources with restraint, especially water, paper and electricity. You will be expected to clean up after yourself, and to play your part to keep the accommodation neat and tidy.

Lokal transport

Arrival Information
We only receive participants on the Sunday before the program begins. The pick-up time from Denpasar Airport is between 06:00 and 20:00. After passing through customs, make sure you stay on the same floor and follow the way to the arrival gate (walking through the duty free shop). Our representative will be waiting for you at the International Arrival Flight Information Center. Please look for your name board. You may need to wait for several participants to arrive before the group leaves the airport.

If you're traveling to Denpasar Bali overland, we can arrange a pick-up at the following meeting points:
- Bintang Supermarket in Ubud at 14:00 on Sundays (Address: Jl. Raya Sanggingan No.45 Ubud, Bali 80515, Indonesia)
- Make your own way to Denpasar Airport at 14:00 on the Sunday before your program starts. The meeting point is at the International Arrival Flight Information Center.

Transfer Coordinator: +62 (0) 821 446 34202

Getting to the Project
To get to your project location, you can either share a taxi if the distance is long, or walk if the distance is manageable on foot.

Departure Information
The latest check-out time from the accommodation on the last Saturday is 11:00. Departure transfer is not included as due to the many different personal plans and return flight times, it's logistically simpler for you to make your own way. Our coordinator can help you with the different transportation options, but you will have to cover the cost.

Måltider

3 meals during weekday are provided (breakfast, lunch, dinner) and 2 meals during the weekend (breakfast, dinner).

Indonesian food is tasty and diverse and you can expect to experience a myriad of flavors and meals during their stay. Typical dishes included mie goreng (fried noodles and vegetables), nasi goreng (fried rice and vegetables) or gado gado (mixed vegetables with a satay sauce). For those who do not eat meat, Indonesian cooking uses a lot of tofu and tempeh (soybeans), we also provide for some of western dishes. Breakfasts are varied and include pancakes, fresh fruit, toast etc. Tea, coffee and purified water is available at the house. We do not recommend that you drink the tap water.

Please inform us of any dietary restrictions or intolerances during your application. However, we need to stress the point that you should not expect to eat as you normally do at home. We will do our best to see that you are well taken care of, but also as a volunteer, there is a need to be flexible and accommodating to the local food.

Please note all meals are served at our centre in buffet style.

Observera att
