The main focus of the work for the volunteers is construction and maintenance of the school and other buildings. There is also a chance to teach English on an informal basis.
Our program provides an opportunity for you to work creatively in renovation and construction efforts to upgrade the living standards for all the children in the orphanages. The children here are not necessarily orphans, many are from poor families who cannot afford to care for them or they come from nearby hill tribes.

Most large orphanages in Thailand have integrated on their grounds their own primary (and secondary) school for their students; they are also open to poor families. The orphanage provides housing, food and teaching materials for these poor students as well. The classes may seem old and a bit dirty, but the students are lovely and are so happy to see our participants each day.

The greatest need is for help with construction and renovation of the school buildings and living facilities. There might also be some opportunities to teach English on an informal basis, help the children in their vegetable garden (for their studies and own consumption) as well as to create activities for the students or arrange workshops for hygiene, cultural exchange, environmental and other important issues. Depending on the particular skills of the volunteers or group's ideas, we may do some arts or handicrafts as well.

It can be nice to bring presents with you for students. In our experience the students are less interested in toys (some typical toys of your country might be interesting), but pictures of your family/house or pets is always well received.

Singburi - Temple School Construction Effort

Aims & Objectives

The orphanage as an institution offers a safe and secure environment for children from underdeveloped areas. Other children come from remote areas of Thailand, where education is non-existent. These children are at the orphanage predominately for educational purposes, and will return home during certain periods of the year.

Weekly Schedule & Activities

Monday to Friday
After breakfast you will leave for the orphanage around 09:00. On your first day you will be taken on a tour of the orphanage. On site you will be organized into groups depending on the various activities volunteers are interested in and briefed on your tasks by coordinators and school staff. Expect to do heavy work at the orphanage for 4-5 hours per day with a lunch break in between. Lunch is always at a nearby road-side restaurant and stops at the local town can be made on the way back to your accommodation.

Tuesday
Visit the night market in Tha Kham. Taste all types of Thai food, stock up on inexpensive clothing or just soak in the atmosphere of this small town!

Wednesday
Half day of teaching where after lunch we offer a trip into Singburi. You can choose to use the swimming pool, go for a Thai massage or take advantage of a trip to a shopping center. In the evening you will have the option to attend a Thai BBQ at a local restaurant. This is a fantastic opportunity to socialise with all the other participants, eat great food and enjoy some music.

Thursday
There is a trip to a shopping mall (including a large Tesco Lotus), where you can buy any essentials, snacks, ice cream, coffee and western food like pizza.

Evenings & Weekends
During the evenings the volunteers are generally free, and there are no program activities scheduled unless otherwise mentioned. Weekends are always free at the Orphanage Construction Effort program. Relax at the Eco-House accommodation, take a local taxi into town, expand your sightseeing and visit the many sites in the central provinces or take a bus to Bangkok for the weekend. Our fiendly staff are always there to make your choice easier with advice.

Please note that the volunteer activities and schedule can change at any time based on the needs of the project, local conditions, the weather and unforeseen circumstances.

School & Public Holidays

When confirming your dates, please take note of the long school holidays (mid-March until mid-May, and a mid-term break in October) and other public holidays (such as the Songkran festival for the Thai New Year in mid-April that is a particularly eye-opening and fun experience!) which schools may take advantage of, this is in their discretion. During the school holidays this program focuses purely on construction and renovation work as the children are on holiday.

What Makes a Good Volunteer?

Volunteers need to be flexible and keep an open mind concerning their placements as situations can arise beyond our control which could require you to be placed at a different project than the one you have initially chosen. We will of course always do our utmost to fulfill your initial wishes but do remember that where you are going is quite different from where you are coming and as such one should be prepared for things not always going according to plan.

Volunteering and intercultural travel share a common trait: the more you put into it, the more you get out of it. This program is designed for proactive individuals and groups that are prepared to adapt to the local environment and its current needs. Naturally, the scheduling and activities of our program are subject to change. Alterations in activities are mainly due to changes in local conditions, which we believe is part of what makes overseas programs the interesting adventure and incredible learning experience that they are.

How Long Should I Volunteer?

Our volunteer partner in Thailand is based in Singburi. The focus is on experiencing a range of local cultural activities and traditions, as well as joining ongoing volunteer programs where you can give your time and energy for a few hours each day. The projects and activities we have chosen are interchangeable locally, as it is possible to make a positive contribution within a week. The exception to this is teaching where we believe it is most beneficial to yourself and the school if you commit to four weeks and construction, where we recommend a minimum stay of two weeks. In our experience the longer you stay the more you will gain, as your understanding of the project broadens and you take on more responsibilities. Every volunteer will be given a certificate of appreciation at the end of their stay as a symbol of volunteering stay.

Optional Culture Week

This program can also include an introduction week which is highly recommended but not mandatory - just inform your travel advisor if you wish to include it. This week gives you the opportunity to learn more about Thailand, bond with your fellow volunteers, and immerse in the area and culture. This is your kick start into a new country and way of life!

During the introduction week, you will learn about Thai culture, get an insight into the language and have a taste of what has made Thai cooking so famous around the world. You will visit Wat Phra Non Jaksi Worovihan temple (famous for containing one of the largest indoor reclining Buddha statues), the ancient capital of Ayutthaya, have monkeys jumping on your head in Lopburi and much more! Moreover, you will get to meet people, take a Thai cooking lesson, learn the basics of the language, and get a first-hand understanding of the Thai way of life. Evenings during the introduction week and the weekend after are free unless otherwise mentioned.

The aim of the introduction week is to help you get a reasonable understanding of the manners, norms, and etiquette that is inherent in Thai society. It is aimed at those who will be spending a prolonged period in the country. Its emphasis is on educational factors, such as the language, cooking, cultural and historical aspects of Thailand.

Location Description
Greenway's Singburi camp is located on the riverside (River Noi - Little River) in the village of Tha Kham, near the small city of Singburi. There are several temples in the area, some of which are quite well-known.

These 3 accommodation options consisting of small bungalows are within walking distance from the nearest towns of Tha Kham and Tha Chang. Alternatively you can take a bicycle to these local towns, where you can find ATM’s, pharmacies, doctors, convience stores and local food markets. The local school Wat Klang Tha Kham also has a swimming pool that you are allowed to use for 50 baht.

The distance to the town of Singburi is 8 to 15 km depending on which accommodation option you choose. It takes 10 to 15 minutes into Singburi by car, where you will find all the amenities you need i.e. internet, shops, swimming pool, hospital, pharmacy, banks and restaurants. There are plenty of trips into Singburi or you can easily take a taxi for 200 baht.

Accommodation Options
Your new home will be one of our 3 Eco-Houses in Singburi in central Thailand - Brown House, Twin House or Lemon House.

The Brown House:
- This is where you stay during the Culture Week.

The Twin House:
- Dormitory accommodation with cold showers and fans

The Lemon House:
- The Lemon House has fewer bungalows and is slightly quieter than the Twin House.
- There are both dormitory rooms with cold showers and fans as well as twin and double rooms with warm showers and air-conditioning in the rooms.
- If you wish to stay in one of the comfort rooms (with warm showers and air-con), you will need to book the Comfort Program (subject to availability).

If you wish to upgrade your accommodation to a single room, you will be staying in a dormitory room, but won't be sharing with anyone else. Please note that private rooms are always subject to availability.

All bungalows have single gender shared rooms with the 2 bunk beds. The maximum number of people per room is 4. All rooms have a private western style toilet and shower where the water is always cool - nice and refreshing in the heat (the comfort rooms at the Lemon House have warm water and air-con).

The doors and windows are screened (to protect you from mosquitoes). There are fans in the rooms. For your valuables, we have lockers available. We strongly encourage you to use them, even if our houses are generally very safe. There are limited laundry facilities so expect to wash your clothes by hand or do this at en extra cost in local launderettes.

All sites have a communal area where you can eat, relax meet fellow participants or use the free WiFi.

Important
A security cash deposit of 500 TBH is required for the key to your room. It is payable upon arrival in cash and will be returned when they key is given back at the end your stay. Please also bring a padlock with you.

Environmental Considerations
All participants are expected to be environmentally conscious and to use all resources with restraint, especially water, paper and electricity. You will be expected to clean up after yourself, and to play your part to keep the accommodation neat and organized.

Please Note
No alcohol is permitted in any of the Eco-Houses. However, most of the houses are within walking distance to the local shop and a make shift bar provided by the friendly locals.

Lokal transport

Arrival Information
We can pick you up from either Don Mueang Airport (DMK) or Bangkok International Airport (BKK) anytime on Saturday or Sunday. Saturday arrivals can stay at our accommodation in Singburi at no extra cost.

Our transfer coordinator, who meets you upon your arrival, arranges your transfer from the airport to Mo Chit Northern Bangkok bus station and then further on to Singburi bus station, where you will be met by one of our local coordinators who will take you to your accommodation.

How to Get to the Meeting Point at Bangkok International Airport (BKK):

After passing through customs, make sure you stay on the same floor and turn right and proceed to ENTRANCE 4. Our coordinator will be waiting for you inside the building in front of this entrance with a sign saying 'Green Lion'. Our coordinator will not move to find you, he has firm instructions to stay at ENTRANCE 4. You may need to wait for several participants to arrive before the group leaves the airport.

If you arrive before 16:00, we will transfer you to Singburi on the same day. Arrivals after 16:00 may have to stay in a hotel next to BKK/DMK Airport for one night. In this case, we still will pick you up at the airport and accompany you to the hotel. There is no extra cost for you. You will be given a time to meet back at the meeting point the following morning for transfer to Singburi.

If you are lost or have any major concerns regarding transfer, please contact +66 (0) 86 001 2838. Your emergency contact person speaks English.

Other Emergency Numbers:
1155 Tourist Police (The Tourist Police of Thailand are trained to assist you in English. Direct any safety concerns to them.)
191 Police
199 Fire Brigade
1669 Medical assistance

We highly recommend buying a cheap local SIM card for your whole time in Thailand (for your own personal safety and for easier/cheaper communication with the other participants, staff and family back home). This becomes especially useful if travelling to your project destination by yourself. You can usually get one at the airport for free or at a low cost. You can also receive one at the accommodation on arrival for free.

Early/Late Arrival Instructions

By Taxi
A shuttle taxi hired at the airport can bring you straight to our center within 3 hours. It should not cost you more than 2000-3000 baht, but it is important to confirm the price beforehand. More expensive options (limousine service) can also be arranged from the airport at higher prices.

By Bus
When you arrive at Bangkok International airport (Suvarnabhumi International Airport), pronounced: su-wan-na-poom), you can continue your trip by BTS airport rail link. This is the easiest and cheapest way to travel to the bus station. The distance from Suvarnabhumi International Airport to Mo-Chit is around 40 km. You should take the rail link all the way to the end station at Phaya Thai which connects you to the BTS skytrain. Take the skytrain to Mo Chit station the last on the line. The station is about 3 km from the bus terminal. Once you get to Moh-Chit bus terminal, please enter the ground floor to the right and choose to buy a ticket for the first class bus ("1st class" in Thai: Bpau neung) to Singburi Bus Station.

Start: Mo Chit Northern Bangkok Bus Station
Destination: Singburi Bus Station
When: 05:00-18:00 every day
Duration: 3 hours
Price: 115 baht

Once the bus leaves the bus terminal, please call the program manager (Phil) on +66 (0) 86 001 2838 to confirm your arrival time and to allow us to have a coordinator ready to pick you up from the Singburi bus station when you arrive.

Måltider

Local (vegetarian) dishes on site, 3 meals a day during weekdays, 2 meals a day during weekends (brunch and dinner). The meals will be typical Thai fare, including plenty of rice dishes. Lunch during the week is always at a nearby road-side restaurant and stops at the local town can be made on the way back to your accommodation. Please inform us of any dietary restrictions or intolerances during your application. However, we need to stress the point that you should not expect to eat as you normally do at home. We will do our best to see that you are well taken care of, but also as a volunteer, there is a need to be flexible and accommodating to the local food.

Observera att

Dress code:
Casual dress is appropriate during your time at the orphanage; however, no see through clothes or low cut tops are permitted.

Transportation:
Our Eco Houses are about 10-15 kilometer from the city, it's a little bit difficult to travel to town by public transportation, but it can be done by local taxi. Our staff can assist you calling a taxi at any time. There are also bicycles available for volunteers to borrow.

Money:
There are a number of banks and ATM machines nearby. The nearest one is just about 2 km away at Tha Kham market.

International phone calls:
SIM cards can be purchased at many stores in Thailand and even at the local village Tha Kham or Tha Chang. It is best to buy a Thai SIM card so you can contact any of our staff without having to worry about costs. These cards can also be used to call back to your home country (Thook Dee International phone card which costs 100 baht). Don’t hesitate to ask your coordinator for assistance.
